CJI Of Apex Court Says On International Womens Day Celebration : Women Should Be Given Preference Appointment As Panel Advocates

 

While speaking at a virtual event that was organized to celebrate International Women’s Day, CJI Ramana said that women should be given preference for appointments as panel advocates as it will increase their visibility before the Bench.

 

 

 

 

 

 

He further said that many good women lawyers give up the legal profession due to societal pressures and there is a need for an enabling environment so women can pursue law as a career, He also pointed out that out of nearly 17 lakh lawyers in the country, only 15% are women.

According to the CJI, to bring about a change and to increase the talent pools there should be reservations for girls in the legal profession. In his address, the CJI said that since he assumed office, he has been trying to correct the gender imbalance and said that out of the 9 vacancies at the Apex Court, 3 were filled by women judges.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The CJI also narrated how his life has been shaped by exemplary women like his mother, sisters, daughters, and wife.

On the issue of diversity in the legal profession, the CJI said that the presence of women is more than a symbolic gesture as women bring a different perspective to the law which is necessary.

 

 

 

 

 

Significantly, the CJI said that if giving women their due share is a revolution then he is happy to be called a revolutionary.
