Law Students File PIL: Seeking An Online Right To Information Portal For The Supreme Court

Two law students have approached the Supreme Court Of India seeking an Online RTI Portal for the Apex Court for filing of First Appeals and for RTI applications.

The petition, filed through Adv Neha Rathi contends that the Supreme Court of India despite being a public authority U/S 2(h) of Right To Information Act, 2005 and they have not created the portal since the Act came into force.

The suit also mentions that the government is already successfully running an Online RTI Portal that covers all departments and central ministries.

It is further contended that The E-Committee of the Supreme Court has already provided an efficient mechanism for filing of pleas but it doesn’t have the same for e-filing of RTI applications.

According to the petitioners, they have already approached the Supreme Court authorities for creating the portal but they have not received any response.

A reference was also made to Pravasi Legal Cell Versus Union of India stating that the Supreme Court has already recognized the legal mandate of RTI Online Portal for States.

The plea also points out that Chief Justice Of India N.V. Ramana has also emphasized the need for litigant-friendly courts.
