The Mumbai police have filed an FIR against Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Youtube MD Gautam Anand in a copyright infringement case filed by filmmaker Suneel Darshan.

The FIR in the case was registered after Addtl. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A.A. Panchbhai passed an order u/s 156(3) of Cr.P.C.

In its order, the court said that the instant complaint reveals prima-facie information regarding offenses punishable u.s 63 r/w Section 51 and u/s 69 of the Copyright Act of 1957, and it’s necessary that the police investigate the case.

Before the court, the petitioner claimed that his 2017 movie Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha has been illegally uploaded on YouTube.

It was submitted that the movie has billions of views on the platform and YouTube has been illegally generating revenue from his movie. Darshan also said that he has filed multiple complaints with YouTube but they have taken no action.

The petitioner stated that he has not provided rights of his film to any third parties and his rights are being mercilessly infringed. After hearing the submissions, the Magistrate ordered the registration of FIR and remarked that commercial exploitation in the garb of fair use should also be prevented.
